Week 4 of the ladies winter competition finished on Halloween night and appropriately there were some spookily good scores. All section winners had 22 pts (spooky or what), and section one went to Dee Farrell for whom this was the second win of the week, having won the ladies Seniors Open on Monday.

Wednesday’s bright sunny conditions must have made some players feel they were competing in a spring rather than a winter league and a few took full advantage to play their best golf in some time. Martin Stewart has come close on a number of occasions this year but each of his rounds has played host to at least one double bogey or worse with a consequent exclusion from the prizes.

Some golf clubs do not welcome junior members at all and others just tolerate them but Lurgan is different. The lakeside club as a thriving junior section as the list of trophies won will verify. The boys won the Fred Daly Trophy this year while Annabel Wilson, at just 13years of age, collected the Irish Girls’ Championship. Niamh McSherry and Niamh Ward have had their names in lights for some time, while Peter Cummins is in Canada playing in the Faldo Series.

There is a touch of Robert the Bruce about the members of Lurgan Golf Club. Whenthey get a development idea they won’t let go until the idea comes to fruition. That’s why the club has unveiled a new training facility that ranks among the best in Ireland. “When the question of financing the project came up and the possibility of getting a grant members set about investigating that,” said club captain Barry Campbell.

Monday saw the monthly Seniors’ Open and John Richardson chose the occasion to record his best score in some considerable time. Relative to his other scores this year 44pts, off 16, is almost like a foreign language, but he maintained calm and measured throughout never allowing himself to get carried away with the prospect of such a high total.

Despite a strong wind making things difficult, scores were still high in the Sunday Shop Sweep and Martin McKinstry added another win to an already successful year by taking first place with 44pts off 12. Just 5 over after 17 holes he confirmed his victory with a birdie at the last, his first birdie of the year at the hole.

Week 1 of the Winter League has seen Norman’s Boy’s just gain a 1 point lead at the top of the League. Impressive scores from team Captain Norman Sands, Aiden Thornbury and Brain Bassett helped the Team collect 160 points and therefore gaining a maximum of 12 team points.

Another very successful presentation night was held in a packed club house where Captain Barry Campbell acknowledged the incredible achievements of our Senior Cowdy Ulster Champions 2014, Fred Daly Ulster Champions 2014 and the Ladies Junior Cup Team Ulster and All Ireland Champions 2014.
