Wednesday Sweep 16 August

Encouraged by his impressive distance off the tee, Patrick O’Neill’s apparently cavalier approach to the game has led to a playing record liberally sprinkled with NRs and birdies.  However he successfully adopted a more conservative approach on Wednesday as he lifted his first competition of the year with 40pts off 14.  His steady approach led to 5 nett birdies, 12 nett pars and just 1 nett bogey as his drives rarely left the middle of the fairway.

Malone Open Scratch Foursomes Perpetual Challenge Cup   13 August

2012 - Steve KellyDave SuttonThis trophy was originally a club competition played for at Malone Golf Club but at the request of the Club the Golfing Union of Ireland took over the running of the event and it has evolved over the years into one of the premier Men’s Open Scratch Foursomes in Ireland attracting many of the country’s best golfers.

Many congratulations to the Lurgan pairing of Steven Kelly and David Sutton who lifted the trophy on Sunday for the second time having previously added their names to the cup in 2014.

This is not the first time a Lurgan pairing has lifted the prestigious trophy as Roy Hanna Jnr and Tom Douglas won it a number of years ago.  They were due to defend the trophy the following year but an injury at work precluded Roy from participating and his place was taken by Neil Jenkins of Shandon Park.  Tom and Neil duly won leaving Tom as one of the very few players who can boast of back to back victories.

The competition was played over 36 holes on a stroke play basis with one round in the morning and the second in the afternoon.  Steven and David hadn’t the most promising of starts when they double bogeyed the second hole in the morning but they made no other mistakes as they went to lunch on level par, a shot behind the Warrenpoint pairing of Paul Reavey and Jamie Fletcher.

As the afternoon went on the windy conditions deteriorated and players struggled to contend.  Steven and David carded a 4 over par 74 while the best Paul and Jamie could do was a 9 over par 79.  Nicholas McClay and Neil McKinstry, both Cairndhu, had followed a morning 73 with an afternoon 72 for a total of 175.

The results were:

1    Steven Kelly and David Sutton (Lurgan)                        +4       70, 74     144

2    Nicholas McClay and Neil McKinstry (Cairndhu)          +5       73, 72     145

3    Paul Reavey and Jamie Fletcher (Warrenpoint)           +8        69, 79     148

Ladies Senior Foursomes Team into Ulster Finals

Congratulations to the Ladies Senior Foursomes Team who secured a great victory over Ballyliffin on Sunday to book their place in the Ulster final on 2nd September at Bangor G C

Ladies Senior Foursomes (1)

From the outset Lurgan always looked like the stronger team and they maintained a high standard of play from start to finish.

Niamh McShery & Katrina Bradford were first out and soon were 5 up but the Ballyliffin duo weren’t going to roll over & fought back to reduce the deficit. However Niamh & Katrina eventually closed the match 3 & 2 despite a well played recovery shot by Ballyliffin on the 16th

The second match Niamh Ward & Fiona Cummins took a two hole lead early in their match and although they wobbled a bit in the middle of the front nine they soon got back on track to finish with a strong  4 & 3 victory

The final pairing of Maeve Cummins & Orla O’Dowd got off to a good start winning the first but were back to all square by the 3rd. However, after a birdie on the 4th, the Lurgan duo never looked back and put the first points on the board for Lurgan finishing 7 & 5!

Ladies Senior Foursomes (2)

Niamh McSherry makes the final putt of the Semi Final

A special mention to Niamh McSherry who has contributed so much to the success of the Senior Foursomes this year and we all wish her well as she embarks on her college career in USA. It was fitting that the final putt of the Semi Final matches went to Niamh as she finished her match on the 16th

Congratulations to all the players who played on Sunday and to those squad members who played in previous rounds and a big thank you to Lady Captain Joy, Mr Captain Chris and all those who came out to support the team on Sunday. Everyone involved is very much looking forward to their Ulster final which will take place at Bangor GC on Saturday 2nd September.

The Junior Cup Team play Malone in their Ulster semi final next Sunday at Fortwilliam GC and we all wish them the very best of luck in this.

Team News: MUSL

Team Lurgan moved into 2nd place with two matches to play, following a strong result at home course last week.  Richard Budd’s team play at Dungannon on the 21st August, and will attempt to moved into top spot for the final fixture.

Team News: MUSA

The MUSA team struggled in heavy conditions at Omagh on the 9th August.  Top scorers were Eugene Maguire & Peter Gordon with 35 points, as Lurgan finished joint 4th on the day with a total of 133 points.  This keeps them in 3rd place behind Omagh and Lisburn in the overall standings.  Still all to play for with only 3 matches remaining in the league.

Team News: Senior Cowdy

Lurgan’s Senior Cowdy team made a strong start in the first leg of their semi final clash with Mourne,  recording a 24 – 8 points lead.  A great result, but there’s still a lot of work to be done if they are going to progress into the final.  Second leg against Mourne will be held on Friday 18th at 5pm.

Good luck!!!
